Changing Things Up! New Look for the New Year!

I saw one if my favorite clients today, Elysia! We have been discussing a change for a while now and I was taking it slow, but today was the day! We totally transformed her! I used an awesome treatment color called PM Shine, that works to heal the hair as it adds color and shine. She has been working hard to change her lifestyle, and has lost some weight, and now, she is a new woman! We were both very pleased with the result. I have been in the creative mood lately, let's see what else comes from it!

Mateo made his first collage!

I wondered what Mateo was up to as I got ready for work this morning. He had such focus on his face, as he created this simple collection of photos. As he places his last piece down he looks up and says, "look mom, cookies!" To him it was just a reminder of time spent with his mommy and daddy making cookies. To me it was his first independently created art piece. Am I exaggerating a little bit, maybe. Am I a proud mama, for sure.

New Years Eve in High Flying Style!

Last minute I decided to fly from Houston to San Antonio, instead of driving for two and a half hours. All is smooth sailing and the view is spectacular! Couldn't ask for a better start to New Years Eve! The day actually started out great with a bride getting ready for her wedding. She was so happy and grateful, and she totally made my day. Now I wait for my merlot, as I embark on my journey to visit with family. I am so grateful for all the people who surround me and wether they are near or far, they are always with me in my spirit. These people made me who I am today, wether purposely or involuntarily through their actions and opinions. Thank you to all who have graced my path, I am truly blessed to have such amazing people to look up to and gain inspiration from.

Photoshoot Week! Pageant work has begun!

This week was filled with the Teen and Miss girls from the America system, from this area! I did hair and make-up for Miss Sugar Land Teen and Miss Houston Teen, but only make-up for Miss Harris County Teen, which is the only one I actually took a picture of. They are all so sweet, and I look forward to working more with them throughout the year! As soon as I get a hold of the final shots I will be posting! The inspiration they gave me was cute and I look forward to seeing the results.

Dinner Time!!! Broccoli vs. Pizza

I made an awesome homemade pizza today from semi-scratch! It was really good!! I had to stop myself from eating after four squares. I bought a thin crust dough, so it was easy to scarf down. Usually Mateo is exited about pizza, but he woke up on the wrong side of the bed after his nap, so he is super cranky! Surprisingly enough, one of his favorite foods is BROCCOLI so I offered to steam some up for him and he agreed. What a strange little child that I have who prefers to have steamed broccoli over pizza any day! He just turned to me and nodded his head and said," Mmmmmm!"

I am on a Roll

I got a request for a "rasta" hat by one of my co-workers. So I used the same pattern I used for the gray beret except I used a much larger hook and added just a few chains to the initial chain strand. I wasn't sure if it would be exactly the style she had in mind, but I think it has the look she wanted.
I LOVE CROCHET!!!!!!! This craft is so great, learn a few stitches and recreate patterns in all sorts if ways!!!! Ooohhh the possibilities! Up next, a slouchy purse/bag for my friend Kate! I haven't found a pattern I like, yet, so I will be making this one by combining a few projects. Can't wait to get started!!

Panda Hat

I received a special request from my coworker Anthony, while I was working on the gray beret (that ended up belonging to Mateo) that instantly caught my attention. He said, "oooh, I want a Panda hat," and I said, "OK!" As soon as I finished making that beret, as well as finished the one that actually fit me, I got to work! It surprisingly didn't take me very long, considering I can only afford to make stuff for a short while during the week. A short three days later, I turned it in to him and he was so exited, so was I! Hooray for projects!!

Craft, Create, Crochet!

It's kinda funny, but, I started a beret crochet pattern the other day, and as I worked it, I felt like something wasn't quite right. Finally, a couple days later when I finished, I realized I really messed it up somehow.
BUT, to my sons advantage it was just the right size for his little head!!!! So I told him, "Mateo! I made you a new hat!". He was so exited he took it right from my hands and put it on in a second. He loves hats, and he definitely loved this one.

I did this sweet Quinceañera today for her party! She absolutely flourished from the time I met her to when she was heading out the door, her head was high and her smile big!! I thought it was real cute she had her braces done to match her dress!

Here they are, the pictures of the hair and Make-up I did for the Miss Texas America Pageant! The beautiful ladies I had the pleasure of working with are Miss Houston Rachael Turner (blonde), and Miss Sugar Land Jackie Foss (brunette). They were absolutely a breeze to hang out with throughout the week, considering we had 5-6 am hair and makeup calls all week! They had to be done by 8:30am on most days, and have to look fresh and fabulous for their preliminaries and finals at 7:30pm! Needless to say they looked spectacular for their events, with their gowns from Wardrobe The Boutique, I only wish I had fancy places to attend so that I could wear amazing gowns like those! I look forward to continue to work with these two ladies in the future!

Sugar Land Fashion Week

This Thursday I was involved, as well as other stylists from the salon, in doing hair and make-up for the kick-off event for this years Sugar Land Fashion Week. It was a great show filled with stylings from the boutiques around Sugar Land Town Square. There were even dogs on the runway dressed in cute outfits! Proceeds from the show benefited the Women's center. I am always down to work towards a good cause!! The hair was extremely fun to create, I only wish people would wear their hair in random different ways for regular occasions! I am gonna try to incorporate some of the techniques I used to create these looks on somebody willing to try a new look, taming it down of course!!! Ooh, I think I'll wear my hair like this next weekend, yes, that is what I'll do!!!

Pillow Talk

It's not what you might have thought! I completed a super cute project today, the beginning of my Sewing Journey! I made Mateo the cutest little pillow following instructions from a book I bought the other day! I chose a cheesy little crayon print but whatever, he's 2 and absolutely loves it, which is all I care about! I spent a few hours on it, not too bad. I picked up all the tools I was gonna need yesterday to ensure I could sit down and complete this project. All in all, I learned a bunch of new tricks to guarantee a beautifully finished look! Next week I make a tote bag, I am really exited!

This is what I wore to the Miss Texas America Pageant Friday night. It was fun, I had a wonderful time, and I always enjoy a reason to get all dressed up! Don't you? I love, love, love, love, my wedges from Target! They are soooooo comfy! I could seriously wear them to run around all day with Mateo, but he's 2, and, although I could walk in them for days, I could not run after him should he decide to make a run for it. So, for now they get saved for date nights when daddy is around or business ventures such as these which call for evening attire!! yessss, I said "evening attire", feels good saying it to! All's well in life and I'm ready for tomorrow!

Flashes of Time, Brightness of Future

Oh my word! It has been over a year since the last time I posted, I can't even believe it! So much has happened in my life, so much to share, now if only I could remember it all, I will try my best! First and foremost, my son, Mateo is now 2 years old. To think, I started this blog with the hopes of sharing my experiences juggling mommyhood and a career, and time got the best of me. I have had a shift in my career, from a focus in make-up to signing on to work at the best salon in Sugarland, TX, as Hair Designer and Make-up Artist among many other top stylists. I have to say, that was the best decision I could have made! There are still many things I plan to conquer in my life (massage therapy, music making, educating) but I need to keep my feet grounded and work on mastering one at a time.

Being at this salon has given me the opportunity to work with so many talented people, from hair dressers to photographers, models, pageant contestants and everyday women, who have enriched my life. Pictured above is a photo shoot I had the privilege of working, with Fadil Berisha, in which we worked on up and coming and former pageant contestants. One of the pictures shows me working on Miss Universe 1995, Chelsi Smith. At the moment I am on contract working the Miss Texas America pageant! My job is to make sure Miss Houston, Rachael Turner, and Miss Sugarland, Jackie Foss, look incredible for each day of this scholarship pageant. I will have pics of the event up by the end of the week.

Glamour Check!

i really love the new starflash collection, that's probably why they called it Love that Look! the texture of the shadows is amazingly smooth, and the color payoff incredible. i'm wearing Grand Entrance and Glamour Check!, with my favorite lashes the #3. i love glitter eyeliners, so the pearlglide eyeliners are my new best friend (sorry gio, u have been replaced j/k), they wear so amazingly, i use them as a base for my powder shadows or just as an eyeshadow themselves. i don't know about u but, Beauty Marked is not a favorite on my list, that is until now, oh my gracious, Rave pearlglide with Beauty Marked on top is to die for. AMAZING, so hot. Black Russian up to and faded at the crease, with a little Stars and Rockets only in the inner corners, jeez, it's cool. can't forget to give a shout out to two of my fave brushes, 239 and 217! without u i'd be lost, trying to blend and carve with my fingers. love ya!

romantic roses!

oh, so much fun dressing up. pretending to be from another time or place, or just a different person altogether. a sort of escape from my everyday, and same 'ol same 'ol. everything from the inspiration to the preparation, the execution to the strutting your stuff. you feel elevated, confident, on another level. no one can put u down cause u know u look good, or at least u know u feel good and nothing else matters.

i was going for a classic look, maybe a 1950's pin-up style. the night before i set my hair in pin curls, slightly tighter for an extra curly look in the back, and regular on top for that large loose curl in the bang area. when i woke, i took it all down, and massaged my scalp to loosen the curls. after it was all big and voluptuous, i took my bobby pins and placed the hair toward the back, sort of with a modern faux-hawk touch, except curly and fabulous. i took the loose curls on top and kept it in a loose pin-curl, to add some style. i then added two gorgeous purple roses in the front right side of my head, cause i feel my "good side" is my left, so i try not to cover it.

the make-up was cool, subtle pinks and purples, with some roses drawn by hand. it was fun for sure. and of course, no look is truly fab without adding some false eyelashes, yum. i even found some time to make the same rose pattern on my arm throughout the day, gosh i love my job. seeing art on my forearm makes me crave getting the tattoos that i've always wanted. but, that is a whole other post.

the entire day i walked tall, and all of my customers were in love with the look, some people on the street were like, o-k, but who cares, they just are not used to it. especially cause i took the baby for a walk in sugarland town square plaza, and the folks out there are kinda conservative. the hubbs is used to it and just smiles and tells me i look nice, and fancy.

i had a great time with this look for sure, and now with the baby it will take a bit more planning to make it happen, but i promise the world and myself to get dressed up at least once or twice a week. so look i forward to writing about my adventures in dress-up land.

I am in love. With who you might ask, or with what? Lower lashes! I freaking can't get enough of 'em. They make any look super exquisite. Fabulous, engaging, and beautiful. I just wish there were more events and ocassions to wear them to. But with baby on the way (17 days and counting) there is no room or real appetite to do anything. So, work will be my outlet (as usual) for visual expression.

Alas, a new year, ready to be taken and transformed into whatever you want it to be. just like every day should be taken into consideration, as a new beginning, a whole new year to grow and learn is really exiting. not only will i become a mother this year, but i plan on finally endeavoring the world of massage therapy. never a dull moment for us, there are approximately nine weeks until the welcoming of baby Mateo, so much love awaits this child, there is no room for fear or anxiety. i am so ready for this. my husband is so ready for this. everyone i speak with can't wait to meet the little bugger, and if he turns out to be a perfect blend of the two of us, we are in for quite an adventure here. oh, life is grand.

This is the lead singer for the crazy ivans from Dallas/F.W., they came in to H-town to perform at Fitzgerald's the other night, so they stopped by the store and I did her eyes. The color of her eyes is just screaming next to that u.v. purple, huh? it's the coolest color combo I have fallen into, Stars n' Rockets over any black liner, it just screams out at you!

Car rides

Many a great look has been captured at random intersections on my way
to work. Its pretty funny, I'm snapping' away trying to get a nice
angle going, the right light (should I open the sun roof?), pose or
natural, is my finger in the right spot ( I take pictures with my
iPhone), when I look over and someone is staring at me, kinda
smirking. I know they're wondering what on earth I'm doing. But, it's fun and keeps me motivated to try new and great things! Enjoy some looks from the past.

In the BIG time...

So, I did make-up for an artist nominated and performing at the Latin Grammy's today. It was very chill, but at the same time a bit rushed, as they didn't allow quite enough time for her to get done, but it came out nice. She was quite particular on how she liked her eyes done, so that was the most meticulous thing. But the experience was pleasant, and, of course, in true MELi style I didn't take any pictures of her or with her, like I mentioned it was all pretty rushed. That is something I need to work on, making sure I take pictures everywhere I go and of all the work that I do. It's one of the main reasons for this blog, to motivate me to keep track of my work. So, we'll see just how well I remember to do so.

Day-2-Day

It's a Wednesday, and I don't work. So, pretty much my look is simple, super natural. I just have a few errands to run, since our ultrasound (in which we were gonna find out the gender) has been rescheduled to December. I was super bummed when they told me yesterday, I cried a little ( so emotional right now). I had just really hyped myself up to find out, but, like my husband reassured me, at least we already know that, so far, we are having a healthy baby, which is the most important thing.

Hi there!
My name is Meli, and I have decided to keep a log of my little adventures in hair and make-up, as well as my soon-2-b motherly duties. I am a 24 yr old, 5 months pregnant, rapidly growing in the make-up company I work for, and always playing with hair when I get a chance.
